A Good Man Dies

The church I go to, Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Milwaukee, had the good fortune of being the home parish of a Mr. Dominec Carini. He passed away last week at the tender age of 96.

Mr. Dominec, as we called him, was an usher. He was there every Sunday at the 9:30 am mass. He was always dressed impeccably. with a tweed jacket and a pocket square and tie. He was sharp and vibrant and a symbol of what I wanted to be like at 96. Hell, I wish I could be as spry as he was when I’m 80, let alone 96.

Mr. Dominec came over from Italy in his 20’s, having served in the Italian Navy prior to the war, when his family moved here, he joined the US Navy. He and his wife were married for 56 years before she preceded him into the arms of the Lord.

His kindness and smile was infectious and he was a fixture in the back of the church. He was “Nanu” to the countless children who attended that mass. He passed away suddenly due to pneumonia on January 18th. Rest in peace, Mr. Dominec, and God bless you.
