Planes, trains and automobiles…

OK, so it was only airplanes but trying to get to DCA from Milwaukee was a pain in the ass. We were set to go at 7pm on Friday, December 18th only to realize Suzanne had evening clinic. So we moved it to the same time on Saturday only to see one of the worst snowstorms of the decade hit the East Coast. We had our flight canceled on Friday night and we were re-booked on the 9am flight on Sunday. Hope springs eternal, I guess.

We had it all planned. Our nanny, Megan would spend the night at our house (since we had to leave at 6:45am) and drop us off at the airport to save on parking fees. We checked in, made it to the airport and through security in time and watched as our plane came in to the gate. The kids are excited and all ready to go when it was announced that there was a complete airport shutdown at DCA.

Immediately, a line started to form at our AirTran gate counter. People were NOT lined up at other AirTran gates so I quickly got 4 seats on the 7pm flight. That issue having been resolved, we were now going to be stuck at the airport for 10 hours. With a 6 year old. And a 3 year old.

We tried calling Megan back but there was no answer so I called a neighbor (the ONLY neighbor with a big enough car for the four of us and all our gear) who was kind enough to help us out.

So the day was spent at home and we made the decision to park the car at the parking garage (or “parking structure” as they call it here in the land of cheese). Upon returing to the airport, and seeing our plane come in, and hearing that DCA had re-opened, optimism was high that we would make it to DC….until the Captain told us that he had no co-pilot. WHAT THE FUCK?

Apparently, FAA regs mandate that a member of any commercial flight crew (including flight attendants) cannot work more than 8 flight hours or 16 total hours (from FAA: “Under current Part 121 rules, pilots in a two-pilot crew, on domestic flights, can generally fly up to eight hours per day. Their workday can extend up to 16 hours, including time on the ground between flights”). Our co-pilot on the inbound flight hit his limit and bolted.
