Hark Upon the Gale – W&M 26 UVa 14

William & Mary receiver Cameron Dohse hauls in a catch in front of cornerback Ras-I Dowling during the I-AA Tribe's season-opening upset of Virginia, which failed to score in the second half. (By Andrew Shurtleff -- Associated Press)As an alum of the College of William and Mary and married to a UVa Med School grad, this was big. No, this was BIG. As a smaller public university in Virginia, we’ve always been overshadowed by our larger brethren in the Commonwealth. With this, for a moment, we lose our inferiority complex (despite the fact that Thomas Jefferson, who established UVa, is a William and Mary graduate), and can crow proudly from the rooftops.

“William and Mary, loved of old, hark upon the gale, hear the thunder of our chorus, alma mater, hail!” Hark Upon the Gale

(This post was originally published in September). Turns out, my wife got the last laugh as her alma mater, Villanova University, defeated William and Mary in the semi-finals of the NCAA FCS playoffs. By one point.
